This is a Chinese traditional Xi Shang Mei Shao papercut painting. Two Magpies standing in the plum blossom tree, one on the upper and one on the lower branch, watching each other. Beautiful and vivid plum blossom petals show you the delicate handwork. The papercut was mounted on navy blue floral silk brocade scroll.
Magpie is a symbol of happiness in Chinese culture. The singing of a magpie foretells happiness and good luck. That's why it is called 'Happy Magpie' by Chinese people. Xi Shang Mei Shao, which means "happiness up to one's eyebrows". This is a Chinese expression meaning "very happy". The reverse side of this old charm therefore expresses the desire for longevity, wealth, and happiness through the use of symbols.
